Migraine Relief May Have Chiropractic Roots for Many Patients

People who suffer from frequent migraines understand how debilitating they can be. The throbbing head and eye pain, neck soreness, blurry vision, and nausea can cause significant disruptions in your day and make you feel miserable.

Potential treatments for migraines typically include pain pills, which are not always effective, nor are they very safe for long-term or frequent use. They may also come with a list of uncomfortable side effects. Instead, an alternative form of treatment like chiropractic may be a safe and non-invasive way to minimize migraine symptoms. Although most people don’t associate headache relief with spinal manipulation, research shows that chiropractic may be a useful contribution to a migraine treatment plan.

Using our advanced Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) approach to patient wellness, chiropractic professionals trained by Ideal Spine may be able to utilize methods designed for treating the spine to promote nerve communication, blood flow, and overall wellness.

How might chiropractic help?

During a migraine, the blood vessels in the head expand, rather than narrow. This results in swelling in the surrounding tissues of the brain, causing the range of painful or uncomfortable symptoms associated with migraines.

Misalignments in the spine may affect blood flow to the head in a few ways. If a spinal nerve is compressed, or if tension in the tissues supporting the spine irritates surrounding nerves that help control blood flow, a migraine may occur.

Chiropractors may use a variety of treatment methods to potentially correct these problems and decrease the frequency and/or duration of migraines. Spinal manipulation or adjustments may correct spinal alignment, allowing nerves the space they need to communicate properly, and relieve pressure put on muscles and ligaments. Massage, stretches, and physical therapy-type exercises may also help relieve muscle tension and strengthen the spine’s supporting tissues, potentially reducing the risk of tension-related nerve irritation.

Additionally, if you experience specific migraine triggers aside from muscle tension, chiropractic treatment may be able to target and treat those, further reducing your chance of developing a sudden migraine.

The benefit of using chiropractic for migraines is that chiropractic has the potential to target the possible sources of the migraine and may prevent or reduce the severity of migraines in the future. It is closer to a preventative measure than pain killers or other migraine treatments, which are more reactionary and tend to dull the pain of the migraine after it has begun.

At Ideal Spine, our focus on spinal and total-body wellness extends far beyond the physical manipulation of the spine and its surrounding tissues. Our CBP approach is comprehensive, meaning we encourage chiropractors to leverage the potential of many aspects of care to provide the best results. Patient education is of high importance, including education on physical activity, lifestyle changes, and other aspects of home care patients can use to potentially alleviate their symptoms. Chiropractors treating patients with migraines should make sure to incorporate educational information into their approach to allow patients the opportunity to improve in the office and at home.

Chiropractic BioPhysics® corrective care trained Chiropractors are located throughout the United States and in several international locations. CBP providers have helped thousands of people throughout the world realign their spine back to health, and eliminate a source of chronic back pain, chronic neck pain, chronic headaches and migraines, fibromyalgia, and a wide range of other health conditions.
