The Lifelong Benefits of Correcting Scoliosis at a Young Age

Every parent has the health and wellness of their child as their highest concern. Over the course of their life, you’ll dote on them as they overcome general threats to their health: everything from common colds, to broken bones, to severe illnesses, and more. It’s your job as a parent to help see them through to wellness.

When it comes to a condition like scoliosis, however, many parents don’t realize they’re overlooking a serious ailment in their children. It’s not your fault – scoliosis can be hard to identify in minor cases. And, unaddressed, it’s a condition that can cement itself in their young adulthood, bringing with it lifelong health concerns.

More than 100,000 children ages 10-18 are diagnosed with scoliosis each year. It’s important to understand what this ailment is and what it can become if left unchecked in children. To do this, you’ll need to consult an Ideal Spine chiropractor for a pediatric chiropractic assessment.

Qualifying scoliosis in children

Scoliosis is best defined as a sideways curvature of the spine. In severe cases, it’s something a pediatric physician will alert you to in your developing toddler. In these cases, it’s possible to act on the spine before it has a chance to mature with complications. In most subtle cases, however, it’s difficult to diagnose until early adulthood. Most children lack pronounced spinal curvature in their adolescence.

There are few methods of qualifying scoliosis outside of chiropractic palpitation and assessment. This is why periodic pediatric chiropractic assessments are a smart choice. They can tip parents off to developmental issues in the spine.

A corrective course of action

The spine usually continues to develop through puberty, which means a catch of early onset scoliosis has a higher chance of being corrected than in adulthood.

Chiropractors will most often utilize a 4-step process for correcting a scoliosis curve, rooting the precise degree of correction to a Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) schedule. The 4 stages of corrective action include:

  1. Benchmarking the deviation from the spine to understand the severity of the condition.
  2. Bracing the spine to counteract the deviation of the scoliosis curve.
  3. Adjusting the spine to promote realignment back to an ideal spine model.
  4. Measuring spinal remodeling at routine intervals, to ensure proper curvature is restored.

In many adolescent cases, corrective bracing and adjustments are enough to spur the spine back into a natural, positive development pattern.

Avoiding long-term problems

Going through the steps of correcting scoliosis in a developing child will absolve them from the much more rigorous task of remedying improper curvature once the spine is fully developed. More than this, however, resolving scoliosis can prevent myriad other conditions from developing, including:

  • Compressed nerve and nerve pain;
  • Disc subluxations and herniation;
  • Sciatic pain;
  • Fatigue or trouble breathing;
  • Gastrointestinal problems.

Problems abound from a spine suffering from severe deformities, and each situation can manifest differently. Allowing scoliosis to persist means casting a line into a very large pond of problems, with the only guarantee of catching something unwanted and debilitating.

Erasing a future of problems

Just like you’d take your child to the doctor if they developed a cough or fever, it’s important to visit a pediatric chiropractor to see how their spine is developing. In the same way you might be able to prevent a cold from getting worse, catching early onset scoliosis could give your child a fighting chance at avoiding a life full of chronic spinal problems. Let the chiropractors at Ideal Spine give you the peace of mind of acting proactively.
