Effects of Chiropractic Care Following An Auto Accident

Effects of Chiropractic Care Following An Auto Accident

Can you think of anything more disturbing and inconvenient than an auto accident? Probably not! A car accident may ruin your day or even your life. The stress of a motor vehicle collision begins the moment it happens. There’s something else, even more pressing, that can be an insidious interrupter of daily routine: injury.

If you’ve been in a vehicle accident, you’re undoubtedly wondering whether chiropractic treatment can help with your car accident damage. It’s a natural question to ask, especially if you’ve sought or received traditional medical care or other forms of therapy without seeing long-term improvement. If you want to learn more about how chiropractic treatment might help with post-car accident pain, keep reading.

The Three Main Stages of a Car Accident

A car accident involves three major stages. The first is during the moment of impact, which can cause injuries and affect recovery. The second is immediately after the collision when minutes, hours, and days are critical to how the body heals. Finally, there are long-term effects that can last a lifetime for some people.

What happens to your anatomy during a car accident?

When a vehicle collides with another object, it is struck or struck by the other object. Another car, a stationary object, or anything else entirely might be involved in the collision—a wall, a body of water, a deer, etc. The impact of the collision spreads throughout the car and through the bodies of those inside during the instant when the automobile strikes or is struck by another thing.

Cars are designed to take as much of the impact as possible in the event of an accident, but it is seldom enough to protect passengers from harm. Cars frequently crumple in collisions for a reason: the crumpling effect is supposed to direct the shock of a collision away from you and onto the car!

Even so, the blow will have an impact on your body. In fact, some research suggests that the less harm your vehicle has, the more likely it is that you absorbed the accident’s shock!

While a vehicle is meant to crumple in order to absorb collision, your body’s structure isn’t. Each joint needs space between it and the bones in your body for cushioning. Even a minor automobile accident can cause harm to the discs between joints. The following are some of the most frequent sorts of injuries suffered as a result of a motor vehicle accident:

Whiplash

Whiplash is a neck injury that occurs when your head snaps back and forth suddenly. It’s one of the most frequent injuries from car accidents, but can also result from other impactful trauma.

Wringing the head forward and backward on the neck by sheer force strangles the neck muscles and joints, resulting in whiplash. Frequently, neck pain, numbness/tingling in the arms, wrists, and hands, headaches, migraines, brain fog, and muscular problems around the neck and back are all symptoms.

If left untreated, whiplash can result in problems that worsen under stress and never completely heal. This is due to the fact that neck joints are frequently misaligned as a consequence of whiplash, which can produce a wide range of issues including discomfort, pain, and disability.

Back Pain

Back pain is prevalent in the aftermath of car crash injuries. The reason being, the force from an accident can cause your spine’s bones and joints to knocking out of place. When this happens, it sets off a chain reaction of issues.

The pain that is frequently caused by a misaligned spine results from the damage done to nerves in the vicinity. When these bones and joints are forced out of alignment from an impact, it puts pressure on nearby nerves that wouldn’t normally be touched. This compressed and inflamed area near the spine is what causes much of the discomfort people feel after a car accident.

Neck Pain

Common injuries resulting from car accidents include neck pain, which can be caused by whiplash–a condition characterized by the sudden forward and backward or side-to-side motion of the head. Other times, these pains are a direct effect of the collision on the body’s structure. When the body absorbs impact from a collision, it often crushes or compresses delicate discs in the spine. The cervical spine (located in the neck region) is especially vulnerable to such damage.

Knee Pain

While rare, some car accidents can cause severe damage to the knees. If you’re in a collision, depending on the type and location of your knees, they might be forced to rotate or twist. This could result in injuries that lead to long-term pain and never feeling “quite right” again.

Headaches & Migraines

Have you ever experienced headaches or migraines after a vehicle accident? We’re so preoccupied with the practical difficulties of a vehicle accident (insurance, car repair, alternative transportation, financial issues, etc.) that we don’t have time to investigate or even note residual injuries that were not obvious open wounds. The most prevalent injury that people overlook following automobile accidents is the development of headaches and migraines, which can last for weeks, months, and years.

Scientists aren’t sure precisely what causes migraines, but they do know that stress is a major player. And car accidents? They’re incredibly stressful events that can leave you with headaches and migraines long after the initial event has passed.

There are other causes of migraines and headaches, including spinal misalignment and inflammation. These can both be caused by car accidents, even if the accident happened many years ago. Whiplash, a subluxation (when the joints slide out of place in the spine), and other injuries that are not immediately noticeable can all lead to migraines and headaches down the road.

Sciatica

Do you know where your sciatic pain stems from? For many people, the answer lies in their past—in a car accident. Sciatica is described as a sharp shooting pain that runs from the buttocks all the way down to the back of one or both legs. This pain can be so intense that when it occurs, victims often feel like they’re going to collapse. Unfortunately, traditional forms of care such as stretching and taking painkillers don’t always work for sciatica sufferers.

Sciatica is commonly caused by the misalignment of joints in the lower back, which can be brought on by car accidents. When your body is impacted by another object or vehicle, it often tries to absorb some of the force through your bones and joints. However, they’re not always able to take that much stress and as a result, shift out of place.

Joints that are out of alignment can be a problem for the nervous system since nerves that are tightly coiled around the spinal cord are disrupted when they move. This can cause nerve interference, inflammation, and, most frequently, pain. Sciatica pain is sometimes severe enough to be debilitating (even after periods of simply resting).

What happens immediately after a car accident?

If injuries aren’t serious enough to require hospitalization, they are generally not treated right after a vehicle accident. However, this is an important moment to address any injuries that might develop. If you suffer minor (or severe) vehicle damage while driving (or if you’re not taken to the hospital), the first thing you should do immediately is seek treatment.

The doctor can examine and document the patient’s injuries. It’s critical to receive treatment so that no “hidden injuries” occur. Some injuries, particularly head trauma, might develop during a car accident and must be treated right away. If you have any concerns, see a qualified physician immediately.

If you don’t have any life-threatening injuries, it’s time to consider chiropractic care for your neuromusculoskeletal system. This is the body region that is most prone to automobile crashes, and it is the specialty of chiropractic treatment.

Chiropractic Care After A Car Accident

After a car accident, complete and professional chiropractic care should be highly considered in order to best assist the healing process of your neuromusculoskeletal system. This system is composed of your joints, muscles, and nerves-all integral parts of how well your body functions. If you’re looking to supportively heal these areas after an injury from an accident, look into chiropractic care today.
